Central to the design philosophy is the infusion of buoyancy and spaciousness, countering the often confining narratives associated with spaces for people of color. My intention was to fill the building with openness, allowing for fluid movement and interaction within its confines. Nick Cave's "Soundsuits" serve as a powerful artistic expression, blending visual and performance art to address his experience as a Black man in America. Cave's Soundsuits are more than just art pieces; they are also wearable sculptures that transform the wearer, concealing their identity and race. This aspect of the Soundsuits is particularly significant, as it was inspired by Cave's response to the brutal treatment of Rodney King in 1991. By obscuring the wearer's identity, the Soundsuits aim to challenge the viewer's perceptions and biases, prompting a deeper reflection on identity and social justice.Incorporating the influence of Nick Cave's Soundsuits into my architectural design, I sought to create a space that embodies the same principles of freedom and boundlessness that the Soundsuits: represent.
The architectural design is inspired by the circular nature of the site's active programs, symbolically juxtaposing the nearby police station. The roundness of the form critiques the stark and aggressive architecture of the police station and other northeastern buildings, offering a gentle yet powerful counterpoint.
Proximity to the police station influenced the design of the ground level, which creatively interacts with the adjacent void, reimagining it with a playful twist. The circulation within my building is not just functional; it's a critique of its surroundings. Nearby buildings offer similar programs, and I saw this as an opportunity to challenge and recontextualize these activities. For instance, traditional spaces like squash courts transform into recording studios, and basketball courts morph into roller rinks, inviting creative misuse and fostering novel relationships with the environment.Upon entry, visitors are encouraged to shift their perspectives and immerse themselves in this dynamic space.
A key challenge was aligning the building's physical structure with its aspirational goals. It was imperative to create a welcoming environment for people of color that didn't resemble a prison. By experimenting with scale and incorporating vibrant colors, I aimed to eliminate any connotations of confinement. The result is a space that resembles a playground more than a jail, a playful defiance of traditional architecture that often confines people of color.
The project I developed aims to be a haven celebrating Black joy, crafted as a lively pink mosaic that enhances community and leisure activities, honoring various cultural aspects integral to our collective experience. This project is conceived as an "interior neighborhood," offering a communal and inclusive space.
